Love is the Light of Truth

“Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary the devil walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”  1 Peter 5:8

Adversary, someone who is against God, and images of a hungry lion are only a few metaphor’s used to describe unseen realities.  Recognizing our spiritual darkness, or blindness, is vital but understanding that an unseen enemy exists is even more crucial.

What greater deception could there be than to make people doubt?

From the beginning of time mankind was clearly warned not to eat from the fruit of only one tree in the garden.  The Creator said you can eat of any tree but this is the tree of the knowledge of good and bad and you will “die” if you eat its fruit.

The enemy is referred to as a crafty serpent.  He was able to place doubt in Eve’s mind about God’s warning.  “Did God really say you would die? look at me, you will become like gods knowing good and bad.”

Eve pondered the serpents words, the doubt was believed and the desire conceived.  Eve must have been horrified after she reached out to grab the best looking fruit on the tree and willingly sank her teeth into that first fatal bite.  She offered it to Adam and he ate it too.  Now they both knew they they were naked.  They were ashamed and afraid because they had not only doubted God’s Goodness but also chose to join forces with His adversary.

Cain was Eve’s eldest son, he was born after the fall of mankind.  There’s no record of anyone actually “seeing” a serpent tempting anyone after this time.  We can learn from Cain’s story that this now “unseen, spiritual” enemy is just as real as the one Eve could see when she was spiritually alive.

Cain and his younger brother Abel both offered their offerings to God, God was pleased with Abel’s offering but Cain didn’t do what he knew was right…

“If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.” Genesis 4:7

God warned Cain about an unseen enemy, just waiting for the chance to pounce through that door and take control.  Cain chose not to do what was right and when it was all over, his brother Able lay bleeding and lifeless.

“The anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God” James 1:20

Tremble, (be agitated) and do not sin; Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. SelahPsalm 4:4

Cain cried out to God that he couldn’t bear the consequence of his actions.  He chose to give into his feelings of bitter jealousy and anger toward his brother.  But now he couldn’t face the horrible reality and the permanence of what he’d done.

Why does Human Nature Prefer Darkness?

“And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their actions were bad.”  John 3:19

Descriptions of the Darkness of the Enemy:

Satan, Slanderer, (to speak against, blaspheme, back bite, mud sling, character assassin, gossip) Accuser, (criticizer, faultfinder, complainer) Adversary, (enemy, antagonist, opponent, challenger, rival) Archenemy,(nemesis) Foe, Hinderer, Evil, (wicked, sinful, malicious, immoral, criminal) a thief, stealing, adultery, covetousness, a murderer from the beginning, Father of all lies, deceit, Author of confusion, appealing to the five senses, selfishness, prejudiced,  stinginess, foolishness, Malice, hatred, spite, bitter jealousy, meanness, nastiness, cruelty, mischievous, malevolence, ill will, hypocrisy, guile, envy, deceit, pride, unkindness, pretense and fear.

Knowing God’s Love exposes the enemy because God is Love and His acts of loving kindness shine so brightly in contrast to the darkness and deception of  the Adversary/Satan.

Descriptions of the Light of Love:

Loving Kindness, Compassion, Pity, Grace, Gracious, Full of Mercy, Kindness, Forgiveness, Gentleness, Patience, Righteousness, to do more than is required, counts others above themselves, is not jealous, is not proud, does not boast, does not dishonor,  does not seek things for it’s self, does not become angry, does not blame, does not rejoice over evil but rejoices together in truth.  Love endures all things, believes all things, hopes all things, remains steadfast in all things.  Love will never perish.  Love is a perfect state, it is eternal, it is an action word.  Greater than Faith and Hope.  Love is Humble, Wise, Pure, Peace-loving, Obedient, Impartial, Sincere, full of the fruit of the Spirit, God is Love, (the Hebrew meaning  of love, Ahav, means much more than a feeling, emotion and intimacy,  it is also an action word meaning doing, providing, protecting…)

Self-Discipline or Self-Gratification

When we choose to follow the Way of Love; courageously, humbly, gently, tenderly, kindly, patiently, joyfully, faithfully, peacefully and impartially, because we learn self-disciplined.

We eventually learn to recognize deception and Truth as clearly as we can see darkness and Light..  We also know there is a  spiritual door, we know we are not helpless and we are able to master our sinful or bad desires.  It is by our own bad desires we are enticed and then lead astray and it is by our choice we overcome them. James 1:14

The Light of Truth Sets us Free John 8:32

Our wrong thinking instantly go from the sub-conscious to the conscious mind as the Light of Truth breaks us free from their bondage.

“He leads the humble in what is right and teaches them His way.”  Psalm 25:9
