Have You Every Wondered What it Means To Be Holy?

“for it is written: “Be Holy, because I Am holy.” 1 Peter 1:16

“For it is written,” a quote from the original Hebrew, holds the meaning of the word Holy.

“Qadosh,” Translated Holy, Simply Means, “Be Set Apart”

“Be Set Apart,” (Qadosh) is not an impossible suggestion, but a well defined command.  Anyone with eyes to read or ears to hear can know exactly what our Creator meant when He told His people to be Set Apart (Qadosh).

“and so as to make a distinction between the Holy (Qodesh #6944) and the Profane/Common, (Chol #2455) and between the Unclean, (Tame’ #2931) and the Clean, (Tahor #2889)” Leviticus 10:10

An Entire Chapter Distinguishing Clean and Unclean Animals

Leviticus chapter 11 follows the command to “be Holy,” with a detailed description of which animals Holy people eat.  Here’s a fun song that makes the it easy to remember; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8v8nmgGD1ik.

“For I Am YHVH your God. Consecrate, (qadash #6942, from qodesh #6944) yourselves therefore, and be Holy, (qadosh #6918) for I Am Holy (qadosh)…”  Leviticus 11:44

“For I am YHVH who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God; thus you shall be Holy, for I Am Holy...” Leviticus 11:45

Leviticus chapter 19 follows the command to “Be Holy,” by reiterating seven of the ten commandments, along with additional detail.  Most importantly, Leviticus 19:18 is the command quoted by Y’shua, and his disciples as the greatest, the sum, and fulfillment of all commandments, “Love Your Neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 5:43,44Matthew 22:39Mark 12:31Luke 10:27John 13:34Romans 13:9Galatians 5:14…

“Speak to all the congregation of the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘You shall be Holy, for I YHVH your God Am Holy…Leviticus 19:2

Leviticus, chapter 20 continues, adding warnings of what is most abhorrent to YHVH, sacrificing children to Molech and unfaithfulness.

…I Am YHVH who sanctifies, (qadash #6942) you.” Leviticus 20:8

“you shall not follow the customs of the nation which I will drive out before you, for they did all these things, and therefore I have abhorred them.” Leviticus 20:23

“You shall consecrate, (kadash #6942) yourselves therefore and be Holy, (qodesh) for I Am YHVH your God…” Leviticus 20:7

“You must therefore make a distinction between clean and unclean animals and between unclean and clean birds. Do not defile yourselves by any animal or bird or anything that moves along the ground—those that I have set apart as unclean for you.”  Leviticus 20:25

“You are to be Holy to me because I, YHVH, Am Holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be my own.” Leviticus 20:26

Be Holy, Be Perfect, Be Blameless, Be Complete, Be Whole

Holy is not an elusive word, it is a dividing word.  It puts a distinction between what is God’s and what is of the world.

Some English translations tell us to be “Perfect,” but no human being is perfect and God knows that better than we do.  The Hebrew word “Tamim,” may be translated perfect but it also means Blameless, Complete, Whole…

When we set ourselves apart, (become Holy) from the profanity (what is commonly done) in the world, by making a distinction between what God says is clean and unclean, we become blameless (Tamim).

“Be Perfect, therefore, as your Heavenly Father is Perfect.” Matthew 5:48

“Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, YHVH appeared to Abram and said to him, “I Am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be Perfect/Blameless/Complete, (Tamim #8549).” Genesis 17:1

“For He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be Holy, (Qadosh) and Blameless, (Tamim) in His presence. In Love,” Ephesians 1:4
