Historical Overview of Today’s Holy Land

“This is a timeline of major events in the History of Jerusalem; a city that had been fought over sixteen times in its history.  During its long history, Jerusalem has been destroyed twice, besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times.”  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Jerusalem

Beginning with The Land of Canaan and The Fallen Walls of Jericho

Artist reconstruction of the north side of Jericho

Artist’s reconstruction of the north side of ancient Jericho, based on the German excavations of 1907-1909. Note the houses built against the mud brick city wall, which rests on top of the stone retaining wall. The Bible says that Rahab’s house was built against the city wall (Joshua 2:15).

This Biblical claim has been confirmed by archaeologists who have found evidence of Jericho and its fallen walls, arguably 12-13 centuries B.C.

“So the people shouted, and priests blew the trumpets; and when the people heard the  sound of the trumpet, the people shouted with a great shout and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight ahead, and they took the city.”  Joshua 6:20; Hebrews 11:30

1400 B.C. the Israelites are given the Land of Canaan as promised to Abram/Abraham.

“YHVH appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this Land.” So he built an altar there to YHVH who had appeared to him.” Genesis 12:7

The Land was divided into Israel’s Twelve Tribal territories pictured below.  In 930 B.C. they split into a Northern Kingdom and Southern Kingdom.

Divided into the Ten Tribes of Israel in the North.  The Southern Tribes were called Judah.

722 B.C. The Assyrians captured the Ten Northern Tribes of Israel.  These tribes eventually dispersed into the nations and are known to this day as the Ten Lost Tribes.

“And I saw that for all the adulteries of faithless Israel, I had sent her away and given her a writ of divorce, yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear; but she went and was a harlot also. Jeremiah 3:8

587-538 B.C. the Southern Kingdom of Judah is next to be conquered by King Nebuchadnezzar ll.  The first Temple of Solomon is destroyed.  Judah’s Babylonian captivity is prophesied to last 70 years.  Jeremiah 29:10

539 B.C. the Persian Empire conquered Babylonia.  King Cyrus the Great released Judah to return to her land and rebuild the destroyed Temple.

“Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, ‘YHVH, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and He has appointed me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Ezra 1:2

323-333 B.C. Alexander the Great, a Hellenistic Greek, was the next to conquer the Land, then the Ptolemy gained control of the Land, continuing to battling with the Seleucids.

198 B.C. Antiochus lll incorporated Judea into his Hellenistic Greek Seleucid Empire, but allowing them autonomy.

175-164 B.C.  Antiochus lV inherited the throne.  He’s the one who sacrificed a pig to Zeus, desecrating the Holy Temple and beginning the Maccabean revolt.

167-164 B.C. the Kingdom of Judah won control of the Land in the Maccabean, (Hasmonean) revolt.  (Remembered by the celebration of Chanukah)

140-116 B.C. the Hasmonean Dynasty is established with the decline of the Seleucids.

110 B.C.  Pompey and Rome intervene in the Hasmonean civil war.  The Hasmoneans gain their independence from the Seleucids.

63 B.C. Judah is incorporated into the Roman Republic.

40 B.C. the Parthians, an Iranian Arsacid Empire, invade the Land.

37 B.C. Herodian Dynasty conquers the Hasmoneans.

27 B.C. the Roman Empire controls the Land.

Y’shua begins His Ministry 30 A.D.  Prophesying the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple.

“Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” Mark 13:2; Luke 19:44; Daniel 9:26

70 A.D.  the 2nd Temple is destroyed by the Romans.

638 A.D. the Arabs of Arabia conquered the Land in the Islamic expansion, at the battle of Yarmouk.

661 A.D. the Umayyad Caliphate of Damascus inherited control of the Land.

750 A.D. the Abbasid Caliphate of Baghdad took over the Land.

1071 A.D. the Egyptians passed control of the Land to the Seljuk Empire, Turkish/Persian, Sunni Muslims.

1099 A.D. the European Christian Crusaders take control of the Land.

1187-1229 the Ayyubi Dynasty, (descendants of Saladin, a Kurdish Muslim leader) took the Land.

1250 A.D. the Mamluks Dynasty took the Land.

1260 the Mongols took the Land from the Muslim Mamluks in The battle of Ain Jalut.

1516 The Ottoman Turks took the Land.

1832  Muhammad Ali of Egypt took the Land, but, in 1840, Britain intervened and returned control of the Levant, (the Land) to the Ottomans.

19th Century, World War 1, the Balfour Declaration of 1917.  The British Government favors the establishment of national home for the Jewish people in Palestine.

1936–1939 the Arab revolt in Palestine was a nationalist uprising by Palestinian Arabs against British colonial rule and mass Jewish immigration…

1948 the name Israel is chosen and a “Jewish” State is named.

Religious Exclusivity is Man-Made

Religious exclusivity is direct disobedience to Our Creator Word.  He is Impartial and instructs His people to love impartially.  His Word does not support ethnocentric religions.   We all have the same Creator and He gave One promise for All people.

His promised (eternal) inheritance as prophesied to come through Abraham, Isaac and Israel, will bless All peoples.

“The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles, (non-Jewish) by faithfulness, and foretold the gospel (the good news) to Abraham: “All nations/peoples will be blessed through you.”  Galatians 3:8; Genesis 26:4

Now that is Good News!  The Physical Land was never the fulfillment of the Promised Eternal Inheritance, Hebrews 9:15

It’s the New Heaven and New Earth we long for because it will be freed from the death. Isaiah 25:81 Corinthians 15:262 Corinthians 5:17Revelation 21:4

The intent of this brief overview is to show, at a glance, by whom and when the Land was occupied.

We Went to Learn More About The Israeli Palestinian Conflict

We thought traveling to Israel and Palestine, to meet with people living in the midst of this conflict, would give answers.

“If we think we have answers, we may not even understand the question.”

Now I understand why we kept hearing this quote but I didn’t think it pertained to me until after I returned home.  Now I have a confession to make, I do think there’s only One answer.  Honestly, doesn’t everyone who believes in our Messiah’s covenant on the cross think; if only they knew the Prince of PeaceIsaiah 9:6Ephesians 2:14

But I came home humbled by some pretty hefty questions.  These questions kept me up at night, or maybe it was jet lag, but either way, I had a lot of time to think.

“There are many sides to this Israeli Palestinian conflict.”

This was another quote we heard as we began our journey into Palestinian territory.  Although walking next to the thirty foot concrete dividing wall I could only see two sides, the Jewish and the Non-Jewish.

Why was this physical dividing wall so obvious when the Spiritual dividing wall had been abolished over 2,000 years ago, Ephesians 2:14-16?  The prophesy of the promised Seed was fulfilled through the line of Judah.  There is no more reason for division between Jew and non-Jew.  Our Jewish Messiah has made both into One, establishing peace …1 Corinthians 12:13Colossians 1:20Colossians 3:11 and 15.

Chrisy at the Wall

So why was there still a physical dividing wall growing?  What exactly has changed in the past two thousand years since Spiritual peace was established?

Peace Was Never Promised to This Temporary World of Death and Destruction

Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world; if it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest by the Jews. But now, My Kingdom is not of this realm.” John 18:36

Do not assume that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.Matthew 10:34

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor/grace rests!”Luke 2:14

Re-reading the three verses above clarified three things: 1.) His Kingdom is not of this world;  2.) it is not observable;  3.) it is within those who rest in His favor/grace, Luke 17:20Luke 17:21.

Since Adam and Eve there has been a purpose for division.  And with the curse of death came a promise of hope, Genesis 3:15.  Our Merciful Creator did not permit them to eat from the Tree of Life and live in their fallen state forever.   No one will not be permitted to eat from the Tree of Life until they overcome, Revelation 2:7

All that to say, “heaven and earth will pass away, but My Words will never pass away.” Matthew 24:35 this world, earth, land is as temporary as we are.

“The Land is Mine.”

Leviticus 25:23Hebrews 11:131 Peter 2:11Exodus 19:5Psalm 119:19.

The land belongs to YHVH (He Exists) to give or take from whomever He pleases.

In reality we are all just renters with One Landlord, Matthew 21:41.  Our temporary bodies and this temporary earth will be made New, Isaiah 65:17Isaiah 60:212 Peter 3:13.

Both King David and Y’shua (Jesus) were referring to the New earth when they said, “the humble will inherit the earth,” Psalm 37:11Matthew 5:5.

I’ve discovered it wasn’t the answers but the questions that humbled me enough to re-think and search the Living, Unchanging Word of YHVH.

Has Isaiah’s prophesy about All people becoming righteous and “possessing the Land Forever” been accomplished? Isaiah 60:21

When this glorious mystery of The Good News is accomplished, who will inherit what Land?  Psalm 37:29Matthew 5:5

“but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then the mystery of YHVH is accomplished, as He preached to His servants the prophets.” Revelation 10:7

“Surely YHVH God does nothing Unless He reveals His secret counsel To His servants the prophets,” Amos 3:7

The Two Sticks becoming One

Regarding Judah and Ephraim, the Jewish and Non-Jewish, and the two sticks became One, “join them for yourself one to another into one stick, that they may become One in your hand. Ezekiel 37:17

“And YHVH will be King over all the earth; in that day YHVH will be the only one, and His Name the only one,” Zechariah 14:9.

We still, hopefully, await the day YHVH brings His Kingdom to reign on the new earth.

“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law, (Torah) or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.  Until heaven and earth pass away not one yod or vav will pass from the Torah until all is accomplished.” Matthew 5:17; Matthew 5:18

All is not yet accomplished.  Physically we still live under the curse of “enmity” YHVH placed between the Seed of the woman and the seed of the Serpent,  Genesis 3:15.

We know Y’shua took the curse on the cross, Galatians 3:13.  He fulfilled that obscure Hebrew idiom, “He will bruise his head,”  meaning, to conquer.  He conquered death when He rose to New Spiritual Life, on the third day of First Fruits. At the pre-appointed time of Unleavened Bread, and proof that the rest would follow, (when all is accomplished),  1 Corinthians 15:20.

“If the first piece of dough is holy, the lump is also; and if the root is holy, the branches are too.” Romans 11:16

Unity in Him

From Adam to Judah, we are able to trace the linage of the prophesied Seed.  YHVH divided one people, from all the peoples of the earth, so all would recognize Y’shua as the promised Messiah.  Yet this physical division remains only because people failed to  search the Scriptures to see what they said about Him. John 5:39

Weather it is believed or not, the reason for the division between Jewish or non-Jewish has been fulfilled.  We are One in Y’shua Messiah, the promised Seed of Abraham, and heirs of the coming promise, Galatians 3:28,29.

From Genesis to Revelation, YHVH’s (He Exists) reveals His plan from the beginning was for All peoples to be blessed, Genesis 12:3Revelation 15:4

“The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles, non-Jewish, by faith, preached the Good News beforehand to Abraham, saying, “ALL THE NATIONS WILL BE BLESSED IN YOU.” Galatians 3:8

But try Explaining that to a Wall…

Back to our tour and the exceptional job our guides did of setting us up with informative meetings and meals with Palestinian Christians, Muslims, and Israeli settlers.

We were met with warm greetings, hospitality, kind faces and stoic stories of suffering, loss, forgiveness and perseverance.  Now I realize how little I understood about the cultural importance of the land. On both sides there are those who are willing to risk their lives for what they know is rightfully their land.
